Out of Idyllwild Josh and I decided to hit both the Tahquitz Peak and San Jacinto Peak. Both are alternate trails (shown in blue) that intersect the PCT (shown in red below).
We started the day at the South Ridge Trailhead. A kind local picked us up as we were walking and gave us a ride to the start of the trail.
About 800 feet into the hike we were in the fog. Later, the snow and slush became a part of the hike. Thank God for waterproof socks.
Tahquitz Peak, 8,848 feet, and later San Jacinto Peak, 10,834 feet, were can’t miss in my opinion.
The peaks added tough miles and frigid air to the trail, but the prize, sunset, was worth the work. Josh actually stayed down instead of scrambling the last 100 feet or so to the top, so I was the only person on Earth taking in this view.
We spent the night at a stone shelter built at San Jacinto Peak in the 1930s.
